We used to take advantage of the friend taxi - then Simeon came along. The car seat makes it difficult.

If you do decide to drive to the airport again in the future, find the Clarion across the street - $7.50/night and free shuttle service.

Sorry to hear about the Celica. Since you apparently changed the tires, I don't dislike this car anymore...

For the record, we could have done the Gruyère trip in public transit. Although the cost for the four of us would have exceeded the rental cost for the day of the car...

Gotta agree with Wendy on the taxi thing...

Upgrades: the trick in Switzerland (maybe elsewhere too) is to book the cheapest automatic car they have. Most likely, they won't have one available when you show up. Insist on the automatic thing, reluctantly accept tiptronic, and you'll end up with a nice BMW or an Alfa.

Interesting!

If you ask ytour friends would probably taxi you to the airport to save the cost of leaving a car parked their while on vacation, I've never understood why people do that.

Whenever I go back to the UK the car-hire company's 'upgrade' me free of charge, its standard practice. I always explain to them that the larger car is less fuel-efficient, less easy to park and therefor NOT an upgrade and I want what I booked. I normally get what I booked or a subsidised price on the erroneously named 'upgrade'.
